Raymond Echols graduated at Chastain yesterday

Some REALLY bad dudes went on a crime spree yesterday that began at Fortification Street and ended at Chastain Middle School although one scumbag is still at large.  WLBT reported:

With guns at the ready, Jackson police officers searched for armed robbers Thursday afternoon, a dangerous situation which prompted school officials to lock down Chastain Middle School.

After searching, police found one man hiding on the property and arrested 22-year-old Raymond Echols.

Some residents at a nearby apartment complex caught a glimpse as well.

“I looked, and there was two guys running,” said resident Stephanie Cisneros. “They were shooting each other, they jumped through the fence and ran, and I just shut the door and ran back inside home.”

Jackson police had been searching for the suspects already involved in three shootings that day.

Surveillance stills show one of the men still believed to be at large, entering the Cash 4 Gold convenience store on Fortification and West before the suspects robbed and shot a man who had just used the store's ATM.

Police say the armed suspects then went to the Cash and Carry Wholesale Store on Interstate 55, waiting for store employees to come out with deposit money.

They got out of their vehicle and demanded money, firing a shot at the employee's SUV, which quickly sped away.

“We feel like it's a group of individuals that we've been looking at, for not necessarily committing armed robberies but some burglaries," said Jackson Police Chief Lee Vance. "So this may be them graduating up to robbing people.”

Our cameras also captured 23-year-old Ryan Waters being taken into custody after police spotted her inside a vehicle.

The third shooting isn't confirmed by Jackson police, but one law enforcement source said it involved a JPD officer.

The source says a cop tried to stop the suspects' swerving vehicle on Manhattan Street, but they fired at the officer instead. It's at that point the suspects ran toward the school.

At this point, two of the suspects have been arrested in the Capital City crime spree.

Officer Colendula Green said Waters and Echols are charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle and one count of attempted armed robbery of an individual.

Apparently Mr. Echols is no stranger to the criminal justice system.  MDOC told JJ that "Raymond Echols was released on probation 5/23/13. He has two convictions – armed robbery and burglary - for which he received a six-year sentence running concurrently."

The Mississippi Supreme Court gave the facts of that case in Christmas v. State (2009) as young Echols testified against his buddies:

Raymond Echols, one of Christmas’s co-defendants, testified that on the morning of July 25, 2006, he, Joseph Harris, Travis Thurman, and Christmas were driving a stolen black Avalanche in and around Edwards, Mississippi.1 Echols stated that Christmas was driving but was not present when the vehicle was stolen. Echols testified these young men observed “an old white woman at her mailbox,” and Christmas initiated a plan to break into this woman’s house. According to Echols, Christmas exited the vehicle, approached the house, and knocked on the door.

¶4. Margie Sellers testified that she answered the door to a clean-cut, young, African-American man who asked whether he could go fishing in the pond near her home. She told him it was not her pond and he would have to ask the owner’s permission. She stated that the man at her door came from a black truck, with the windows tinted, and she could see “the forms of two others in the truck.”

¶5. The men then left, drove a short distance up the road, and returned to Ms. Sellers’s house. Echols testified the men had no intention of going fishing, but planned to rob Sellers. When they returned to her house, Echols testified that only Christmas and Harris went to the door. However, Ms. Sellers testified that when she opened her door a second time, there were three men. Ms. Sellers stated she saw each of their faces, “but as far as taking a good look . . . I did not.” According to Sellers, one of the men told her that the owners of the home with the pond were not at home, so she stepped outside her door onto the porch to point the men to another home. Ms. Sellers testified that when she turned to go back inside her home, one of the men

grabbed me from behind, put a gun to my head and shoved me on in the house, and he was pushing me. And he said, “where’s the money? where’s the money? I’ll kill you.” And the other came running through and went down to one end of the trailer while he was pushing me toward the other end. I told him – I said, “what money I have is in my purse on the couch. And just take it and leave.”
Ms. Sellers testified she was then shoved by the man onto the floor in a closet. She stated that he told her to stay there and then ran out of the room. Once the men left, Ms. Sellers called 911.

¶7. According to Echols, Christmas was the person who grabbed Ms. Sellers and put the gun to her head. Echols said that Christmas pushed the victim into the house, and Harris followed. Echols testified that when Christmas and Harris came out of the house, Harris was carrying a white purse.

¶8. Meanwhile, the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department was tracking the stolen black Avalanche through the vehicle’s global positioning system. Deputy Sheriff Andrew McKinley testified that while he was on patrol, he received a call about the location of the stolen car. McKinley testified that around the same the time he first observed the Avalanche, he learned that there had been a house burglary in Edwards and that another unit was responding to that burglary.....
Ms. Sellers was 80 years old. Mr. Echols cut a deal and testified against his cadres in crime.  He received a sentence of twenty years in prison with fourteen years suspended.

How do we stop this cycle? What can we do about it?

It's crazy to me to think about being 22 and this being my life.

There is little to no hope for an individual like this to one day be a functioning, contributing member of society.

Sometimes I wish we were a little more barbaric like Roman times and say, in cases like this, send the kid off to be in the military. Have a regiment of convicts and conscripts and use them. They could be an initial attacking force or something. Maybe that would rehabilitate them.

We have to stop the bleeding somehow. Teach kids how not to get pregnant. Kids need to stop raising kids. They need to get real educations that are transformative and there needs to be more economic opportunities.

I can't think about it for too long because I become exhausted and disillusioned. I want Mississippi and Jackson to be the great place I know it is but I don't even know where to start sometimes. It feels like we are in a third world country with a whole section of our society who is just completely lost. And if I'm honest, I'm too complacent and lazy to actually get out there and do anything to contribute to fixing the problem.

Revival is what it's going to take, teach biblical principals (which after all are the backbone of our western principles) in the schools and teach good vs. evil. This is why their is so much evil. Money won't fix it. My grandfather was poor as dirt as a child but had the right morals and did well in life.
I bet none of these kids had a strong father figure around.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
