Tabled!

Its all about protecting the status quo, not about excellence. Does this surprise anybody?

Remind me who nomenated him? I mean, if you want to get your nomination through the Senate, maybe you shouldn't bash the Senate every single day of the session in every single speach on the floor. Just a thought. I know that the policy should trump the politics. But, actions have consequences.

Who on committee was against him??

Anonymous said...

Maybe he can be on the State Board of Home School Education.

Can the Governor make a recess appointment since the legislature has adjourned sine die or does the Board of Education just operate with one fewer member until the Senate is back in session?

"Under questioning from Sen. David Blount, D-Jackson, Bomgar said he hadn't formed opinions on vouchers for students to attend private schools, publicly funded prekindergarten, or allowing private companies to run public schools."

Does anyone here believe that? Never mind your politics, whether Bomgar's a good guy, whatever. Just this: do you believe he was telling the truth in that answer?

We all know that Tate controls the Senate. If he wanted the nomination out of committee, it would have made it out. This is just another example that Tate is a country club Republican who has no regard for social conservatives.

I don't know the answer to that. But, the statute is clear that the speaker gets two nominations. A nomination from the governor would seem to fly in the face of the fact that this was Speaker Gunn's nomination.

Tate Reeves strongly supported Bomgar. The problem is that even he could not overcome the anger of Senators who are fed up with Philip Gunn.

Joel Bomgar would have been a terrific appointment. We need someone on that board who is not part of the education establishment that continues to resist any and all efforts at reform and accountability.

The idea that Tate Reeves killed the nomination is foolish. Tate and Joel worked closely together to advocate for passage of a strong charter schools law (not the sad excuse for reform that the House passed).

3:19 - you are absolutely correct. Both your points. I was going to say basically the same thing while reading thru these comments, got to yours and couldn't add anything better. Bomgar would be a great appointee, bring a reasonable and viable opinion to the table for discussion with the State BOE. And the mere idea that Tate Reeves would have killed this appointment 'just because' is ridiculous. One, there is not that kind of animosity between him and Gunn and two, Bomgar was as strong a supporter for Reeve's charter school bill and other education proposals as there exists.

Problem was a couple of GOP senators who were personally mad at Bomgar and the MCPP, and the Dems on the committee that don't like anyone challenging the status quo at DOE.

Bomgar said with a straight face that he has "no opinion " on publicly funded pre-K? He's the vice-chair of the board of MCPP, which is unabashedly anti-pre-K. That's pants-on-fire territory to claim he doesn't have an opinion.

How clueless are you to say that Tate is against social conservatives bc Joel Bombar didn't get confirmed. Joel Bomgar is a businessman not an advocate for pro life issues. He's been a defendant for charter schools, and guess who else pushed the most conservative charter school package ever introduced in MS....yep, Tate Reeves.

Have a clue before commenting.

Isn't the committee vote public? Who were the Republicans who voted against Bomgar's confirmation getting out of committee?

Blount
Wilemon
Carmichael
Massey
Jordan
Jolly
Hale
Hopson

Tate is one of Joel's biggest backers, it wasn't him. It was the democrats on the committee plus a few republicans that got their feathers ruffled by the MCPP on other issues. Chalk it up to naivety for hanging out with the wrong crowd before a confirmation hearing. Joel's connection with MCPP sunk him.

PS...that committee is usually full of people with public ed on their resume. I don't know that this state is ready for somebody as radical as Bomgar. i.e., they aren't ready to do something that might get off #51.

What a shame there are no retired PhDs in education who taught at private universities or retired MEd's who taught in out of state school systems to nominate and who aren't entrenched in politics!
Oh wait! I can come up with 30 extraordinary womens ' names right off the bat!
Let me get a bound notebook of CVs to send out!

Yeah, PhD's in education are qualified to fix all of our school problems, given that their degrees are printed inside of popcorn bags. Meanwhile, people successful in real life are excluded from the process because they don't "get" how education works.

I'm told Tate made it clear that he did not care what happened to Joel Bomgar. Tate has no regard for Bomgar and was happy to embarrass Gunn. I'm told MCPP had nothing to do with this decision. In fact the only Senator who brought up MCPP voted for Bomgar. He is simply a charter school extremist who wants charters in every school district and that's more than these senators could take.

Given the "douche-bag" tweet by a MCPP staffer toward the Cat Island purchase, there were several coasters that were ready to bury anybody associated with MCPP. Joel happened to be the innocent by-stander because of his affiliation with MCPP. Too bad for Joel, and too bad for our school children.

So Republicans Videt Carmichael, Briggs Hopson and Chris Massey defeated a conservative nominee supported by Republican Governor Phil Bryant, Republican Speaker Phillip Gunn and Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves. Paging Tea Party Primary candidates...

Anonymous said...

3:16 had it right. They were mad. And they showed it. Tate supported Bomgar. But, by the end of the session, the Senators had enough of a speaker that permitted daily Senate bashing on the House floor.

Anonymous said...

Makes no sense to have a person who home schools and belongs to an organization who has such a vocal agenda - on the board of education. Would make better sense to appoint Haley to be on the Parole Board.

Anonymous said...

What doesn't make sense is for Bill Jones to be continuing to serve on the Board of Education. Jones is an attorney who has sued school districts even while serving on the Board of Education.

Curt Crowley said...

"This is just another example that Tate is a country club Republican who has no regard for social conservatives."

And how is this a negative thing?

You could accurately restate that by saying Tate is a true conservative who doesn't waste the people's time and resources on Stupid Issues, and doesn't trouble himself to step-and-fetch for the Extra Chromosome wing of the Party.

Funny how much bigotry comes from the supposedly enlightened Curt Crowley.

Curt Crowley said...

2:27 are you one of those poor persecuted evangelicals that just can't catch a break?

You have prostituted the word bigotry. It isn't bigotry to be intolerant of the evangelicals who bully politicians into writing civil laws that amount to Christian Sharia. It is their actions that are the problem, not their beliefs.

BTW, the term "extrachromosome wing" was coined by none other than Lee Atwater, and used frequently by his boss George HW Bush. Atwater and Bush both knew they were nuts. 20 years later we know Atwater and Bush were right.

Anonymous said...

Great lawyering there Curt..."it's not hate if i'm the one hating"

Curt Crowley said...

Well, I'm not sure I can make it any more clear. What evangelicals believe is their business and I won't criticize them for those beliefs. However, when some of them take those beliefs and attempt to enact them into civil law, then their actions become my problem.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
