Denny-Carson thread.

Bill Minor wrote about it in his latest column. A column reeking of pettiness and sour grapes. You can read it here. Consider this post an open thread on the Denny-Carson race.

I really don't understand Minor's reference to Lynch. What the hell does that have to do with the rest of the article? Is he just trying to make the connection so he can say that Republicans are using "intimidation and trickery" this time like they did 140 years ago.

Also wondering whether he is relying on the history books for that info. Hell, he was probably there.

Mr. Minor, there does come a time when enough is enough. Your back porch and rocking chair are calling.

Your headline spells it 'Denney' but the spelling is 'Denny'. FYI.

Bill Denny is active and coherent for an 80-year old. He makes more sense than Bill Minor. I would rather have an 80-year old that votes right than a 40-year old that doesnt.

Ahh, Bill...how can someone so old hate so fervently?

Rep. Denny's age won't be a factor. He's still active and sharp, and he knows the ropes as well as anyone at the Capitol. At least he's courageous enough to which party he's in. It's hard for me to take Mr. Carson's candidacy very seriously when he's working so hard to hide the fact that he's running as a Democrat. Bill Billingsley

Thank goodness that Bill Denny takes an actual stand.

Dorsey Carson won't commit to anything beyond raising taxes to fully fund a taxpayer unfriendly MAEP formula that is an unreachable budget buster even in the flush years.

Anonymous said...

Wake up folks! Dorsey Carson is a TRIAL LAWYER. He is a DEMOCRAT. He is in the same group with DuPree, Obama, and Billy McCoy. He is trying to fool everyone into voting for him because he's such a nice guy.
Dorsey is a nice guy, but that's not the point. Do you really want the Speaker of the House to continue to be a Democrat, so that we can't get any good conservative legislation passed? NO.
Vote "NO" to the Democrat. Vote for Bill Denny.

Anonymous said...

Let's see.

Bill Minor wants Democrat Carson.

'Independent' Ladd (yeah, right) will endorse Democrat Carson because Denny (smartly) doesn't worship at the JFP altar.

Harpy Hampton will likely push the C-L endorsement to Democrat Carson because our big talkin' gaggle of former one-term Dem Guvs thinks he is a swell guy ... though ol' Davey never wants to turn out long serving incumbent Dems with Denny's level of experience and seniority.

Yup, put a fork in Democrat Carson. He's cooked.

11:18 is a LIAR. Carson is not a trial lawyer. He works at a big law firm with 200 lawyers that represents insurance companies and big business.

I support Denny. Want a reason to vote against Carson? He's a liberal democrat. That's enough in itself. There's no need to lie. We're Republicans--we're better than that.

Bill Denny knocked on my door and introduced himself. I have seen him quite a few evenings doing the same in my NE Jax neighborhood.

I have never seen the democratic Carson fella....but I do see a ton of democrats up and down old canton rd.

Rollingwood homeowner since '95. Bill Denny has personally knocked on our front door to chat and say hello every year since we moved in. Not just election years. Never seen that from any other politician ever. He knows our names. He can see you at the grocery he walks up and says hello. Call him on the phone he calls you back. Joe Nosef spent double than Bill Denny and didn't win. Hard to see how Mr. Carson does it.

Ridgeland-3 is home to 25% of the HD64 BVAP. That is one-fourth for the statistically challenged. 1880 BVAPeoples in 2010. But, but, but the precinct is notoriously reliable for low turnout on election day.

Why? The precinct is home to a gazillion apartments including the Baymeadows dump. Turnover, churn, people always moving in and out means low rates of voter registration and even fewer folks trekking to the polls on election day. Not just this year but also historically. Take out Ridgeland-3 and the district BVAP shrinks to 26%.

12:19, you are 'partly' right, but not quite as whole as you want to claim. Dorsey is the lawyer for the disgruntled employee at Parkway - suing for being fired. Don't think that fits in your description of Dorsey. Yes, he does represent some corporate clients and insurance companies. But he does have a streak on the other side. Agree that there are plenty of other reasons to be against him, and I wouldn't put him in the "trial lawyer" camp as one of those reasons. But, he's not pure on that quality either.

Well, here is what they meant when they said to put on the thick skin! What I know very well is that the neighborhood that I grew up in is part of the highest teenage pregnancy rate in the nation and a 40% dropout rate, which equates into teenagers breaking into our home (twice) and stealing our stuff. If caught (these weren't), then our taxes then go to pay for incarcerating these absent teenage fathers while another fatherless generation comes through the same "schoolhouse to jailhouse" system. I frankly have not found a politician who seems to care enough about those facts (or even understands their existence) to try to do something about it. By his own words, the only reason that my opponent is running again is to elect a Repubican Speaker. Perhaps that is what some of you think is the most important thing, too, but neither the election of a Democrat or Republican Speaker is going to solve these problems. I can't correct all the inaccuracies here, but here are a few: I will not vote to raise taxes to fully fund MAEP. We don't have to. I will not take away the protections from tort reform (all passed under a Dem House). I have raised about $10k from doctors, and my opponent's statements that I am against doctors is blatantly false. Rudy gave me $500, out of $80,000 raised. I don't even qualify to join the trial lawyers association, and have never represented a personal injury plaintiff (the last personal injury case I defended was with Rep. Phillip Gunn as co-defense counsel--who is also not a "trial lawyer" the way that term is understood). I'm not ashamed of being a Dem, but I am ashamed of the lack of leadership and partisanship in both parties. Partisanship can't and won't solve Jackson's problems. Maybe my election won't either, but I have fought battles that seemed much more lopsided than this one, and I believe our community is ready for somebody who has the energy and enthusiasm to work across the political aisle for positive change. This will be my only post on this, so let me put on my thick skin now while y'all fire away!

Ed and Barbara Blackmon drive $200,000 cars from fees from lawsuits....Shane and Rebecca are worth 100 million plus dollars....from silly lawsuits....Scruggs...Nutt....Minor....Sweet...Freis....Schwartz..and the list goes on from there.

White republican solution is tort reform....again. We still have lawyers post tort reform... Must need more!

White republican zealots will not stop until lawsuits are totally done away with...loser pays...more caps....

The only way to stop Shane and Rebecca is to put republicans in....

I will not vote to raise taxes to fully fund MAEP. We don't have to.

Then tell us Mr. Budget how MAEP has only been fully funded TWICE in its history if it is so easy. Give us specifics not spin. Please, enlighten us Mr. Budget. Where would you find the money and which Peter would you rob to pay the bill? Great soundbites and all but zero specifics. Looked on your website for something, anything to validate your claim. Found ZILCH.

Thanks for playing.

Parents Campaign:
For Fiscal Year 2012, the MAEP appropriation is underfunded by $237,386,693. Assuming no more than 2% inflation, the formula would likely require about $2,365,180,600 for Fiscal Year 2014 (to be decided in the 2013 Legislative Session), about $392-million more than was appropriated for Fiscal Year 2012. Would you support getting to this full funding level in two legislative sessions?

Dorsey Carson:
I would support fully funding MAEP within two legislative sessions. Monetary support towards proven and promising educational strategies whether through reallocation or new funding must be considered.

Which Peter gets robbed, er, reallocated Carson? As for "new funding" I think most conservative voters understand that tax-and-spend Democrat-speak by now. But please share with us all your budgetary wizardry.

Hey Cecil, Dorsey calling. Ring, ring.

I think Mr. Carson is the only person that has posted something about an actual issue that needs to be addressed in order to help his district in the future.

What specifics did he provide Shaun? The "schoolhouse to jailhouse" meme is long in the tooth while JPS, for example, only delivers lower results with each budget increase. Give us something new and fresh because all we have is Democratic spin in Carson's only post and his website is equally bereft on details to substantiate his campaign sloganeering.

Yeah, we don't like the blackmons because they have money. And just to make sure you know who he is, Ed has his name sewn on his cuffs so he doesn't have to trouble himself to give you a business card.

WOW!
This thread is very instructive if people can step back from their biases.
We start with Denny urging voters to elect " The FIRST Republican Speaker".
Minor uses that historical error to point out what he feels are Denny's short comings. So the escalation begins...
We get those who actually believe that name recall, friendliness and " coming by" are indications of actual interest in the voters and competency on the issues when they are really nothing more than political skills and tactics.
Then we get the continued joke that there are actually more than a handful of real " liberals" in MS , none of which hold office. Please find me ONE politician who has run on a pro-abortion,pro-gay rights,pro-tax platform and who didn't mention his church activities in his or her literature.
Then the ignorant weigh in who don't know that Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts is a member of The College of Trial Lawyers.
Trial Lawyers are those who appear in court and argue the case. It's personal injury/tort lawyers you are suppose to hate, but the political strategists knew you were too dumb to know the difference and decided just hating all lawyers would do.
Then we have to have the racial comments. " Seeing democrats on Old Canton Rd" and throwing in Black politicians that hardly anyone of good sense ( even of their own party) admires. Whatever are you folks going to do if Cain gets the GOP nomination? Is he your OJ?
I appreciate Carson coming to the site. You are living proof that Republicans and doctors don't hate lawyers when they need competent legal advice as many of your clients are GOP conservatives. That some of the bloggers missed your points entirely just speaks to the success of political strategists' these days in inflaming the passions and turning off the brains of the public. We've become a Nation of ill-informed dupes.
And, KF, I love you ,man. You do much good in informing the public but your personal dislikes for some...be it the Blackmons,Minor or Ladd... are more effective when you just slam them on facts . You really don't want to invite fashion/lifestyle choice critiques of conservatives you like. This would be like asking who is more ostentatiously grotesque, the Housewives of Beverly Hills or the Housewices of New Jersey!
These blogs discussions would be far more useful if we could focus on issues ,find solutions we hope would work and think how to restore accountability into the systems rather than talking about who or what we hate all the time!

Anonymous said...

What solutions did you just present?

Kingfish said...

Let me see, I referenced the school bus bill, the parking in handicapped spots, the nissan lawsuits, and the elections in Canton. Where did I not slame them on facts?

Here are some facts:

JPS Enrollment =
SY2005-2006 = 32,403 students
SY2011-2012 = 29,800 students
** Down -8.03% since 2005. **

JPS Budget =
SY2011-2012 = $205,409,919.00

JPS Graduation Rate =
SY2009-2010 = 68.8%
SY2010-2011 = 63.6%
** That is a DECREASE **

Now for comparison purposes the ENTIRE (... for Carson backers that means the whole thing ...) FY2011-2012 Appropriation for the Mississippi Department of Corrections is $331,737,289. So where does the money come from Carson? How much and from where do you plan to make your budget reallocations? (... which is a ruse... ) Give us specifics and not the same bullshit soundbites we've heard ad nauseam from the Democrats backing you in the House. (... any of your big talking backers are free to jump in here anytime to try and save your butt ...)

MAEP is an unworkable and inflexible formula that by design hardcodes budgetary growth regardless of national/state economic conditions, the ability of the tax base to shoulder the annual increases and with no consideration of any other statewide budgetary need or requirement. MAEP is a perfect example of broken legislation that operates in a vacuum and creates a budget busting unfunded mandate each and every fiscal year. (... and as an ardent Obama backer you probably think the idea of a hardwired and increasing budgetary requirement beyond the will of voters is a good thing ...)

In 2002 under a Democratic Governor and Democratic majorities in the House and Senate the PEER committee identified that the formula represents significant challenges because it doesn't account for school district inefficiencies nor produces an accountability mechanism for targeted spending at the school district level.

The formula is so unworkable it has only been fully funded twice and only once during Democrat Musgrove's four years of legislative Democratic majorities. Tell us why that is Carson? Because instead of demonstrating some intellectual curiosity and a desire to get to the bottom as to why the formula only produces annual funding shortfalls that we are always chasing you simply fall in line with your fully fund backers who, despite your protests otherwise, have repeatedly voiced full-throated enthusiasm for a general tax increase in this state.

Show us something beyond the overused societal ill tropes being recycled by your campaign about fatherless children and teenage pregnancies. MAEP makes for great political theater but the fully fund mantra your chanting is simply not based in reality.

I am surprised that Minor would highlight 1) just how far back and deep the Democrats bad treatment of black folks goes; and 2) that in the early days after emancipation, how the Black folks had joined the party they KNEW had been responsible for their emancipation (hint: it wasn't the Democrats).

PS - And who says Herman Cain is insulting black people when he suggests that some in the community are brainwashed?

10:06 "Ok, correction.....Dorsey is a personal injury lawyer"

Well you did get the terminology correct, but it's still a lie. As someone stated earlier, stop lying. Dorsey Carson is not a personal injury lawyer. Check out his firm, as well as his practice profile, at burr.com (and please spare me the 1 example out of 1000 cases he's handled where he represented an evil injured person).

If you are going to lie, at least come up with something that isn't so easily proven false. (Example: "Dorsey kicks his dog and hates Jesus." There's a good non-verifiable lie you can use. You're welcome.)

I can count on one hand the number of democrats I've voted for in my lifetime. But regardless of one's political persuasion, the lying needs to stop.

Anonymous said...

10:33 that is one of the best rebuttals I've read. This sentence could not be more spot on. "MAEP is a perfect example of broken legislation that operates in a vacuum and creates a budget busting unfunded mandate each and every fiscal year." MAEP doesn't work. Well intentioned honorable people serving our great state on both sides of the aisle care about children and public education. They want it to work but it doesn't. It didn't work in good times and is worse in bad. Fifteen years later it has become a wedge issue that one side won't acknowledge desperately needs reform because now they have an election season bludgeon and pathway to the political power of campaign contributions. Then there is Obamacare. If it isn't repealed we're facing another $125 million dollar minimum unfunded state spending requirement courtesy of the Federal government. Those aren't my numbers. That is DFA's forecast of new mandatory average yearly spending every year to 2020. Where is that money coming from? Where are we going to find another $500 million or more in FY2014 to fully fund education and pay for Obamacare? Its not going to happen and a tax increase big enough to cover would fatally cripple our struggling economy. Education or health care. If MAEP isn't reformed we can't do one. We will never be able to afford both.

Why is partisanship a bad thing? You're proud of being a Democrat; you must be proud of the election of Tyrone Lewis, right?

Surely you're proud of the way the Democrat Party in the South has abdictated its power to the NAACP?

And Dorsey: Why, if you're proud to be a Democrat, did you not put your party affiliation on your push card? When my girlfriend and I met you last summer -- you gave her your card -- she said, "What party is he in?"

"It doesn't say on the card," I asked?

"No."

"Then," I said, "He's a Democrat."

"How do you know?"

"The only white people ashamed of their party are Democrats," I said.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
