Senator Billy Hewes introduces animal cruelty bill

Senator Billy Hewes, R-Harrson and candidate for Lieutenant Governor, introduced SB #2127. This bill will make animal cruelty a felony-offense. Mississippi is one of only four states that do not have such a law. MS-FACT will hold a press conference today at 9:00 AM to promote Senator Hewes' bill. The press release is posted below.

Funny that Senator Hewes would do that this year. WHERE WAS HEWES LAST YEAR when we needed his help. must be an election year ploy!

You are either a troll, hack, or complete dumbass. That's right, I wrote that. Why? BECAUSE HE SPONSORED A SIMILAR BILL THAT PASSED THE SENATE and was killed by Farm Bureau and their allies in the House.

Take that crap somewhere else. You want to lie, do a better job than that.

Billy Hewes is an awesome guy. If you've ever wanted an statewide elected official who can play blues harmonica like nobody's business, he's your man. He used to sit in with the band at the Subway about 15 years ago.

Well, MS needs this. EVERY state needs this...I hope this isn't being dangled in front of our eyes like a bone in order for a vote.
Senator Hewes you better follow through with this....

The Senate isn't where we really need to worry, it's the House where it all comes off the rails.

It makes our legislators look country dumb that they don't know the difference between common sense legislation and extreme activism for animals. It's pitiful and an embarrassment.

Senator Hewes sponsored this bill last year and it passed the Senate by an overwhelming majority. The bill was then tabled by the Ag Committee and never reached the House floor for a vote.
If you support a felony law prohibiting and punishing malicious acts of cruelty to dogs and cats, the most important thing you can do is write to your senator and your representative and express your support for this legislation. If you are represented by a member of the Ag Committee, call and write them every day.
The only way this law will be passed is if you let YOUR representative know that YOU want it passed.
Signed, Marlo Kirkpatrick, MS-FACT

Today's press conference was also attended by many uniformed law enforcement officials who spoke in support of this legislation as an important tool for protecting people.
It's hard to call supporters of this law a bunch of "radical vegetarians" when the burly deputies are all standing up in favor of it.

I am going to eat a steak and think about this.

Anonymous said...

8:07 while you're digesting your steak, see if you can digest the difference between animal cruelty and animal rights as well.

This bill will not affect the beef industry nor the price of steak nor your ability to grill and cook it. You've nothing to fear unless your recipe begins with a live cow, gasoline and a match and ends with you threatening your family you'll do the same to them one day.

Anonymous said...

8:08 a,.m., loved your comment, but in actuality, that recipe would have to begin with a live dog or cat, as this law protects dogs and cats ONLY. A felony law protecting livestock is already on the books. Another reason that Farm Bureau's opposition makes zero sense.

Anonymous said...

10:21am I wasn't aware of a felony law for livestock in the state. Thanks for the info but not sure ignorance wasn't bliss.
Torturing a cow or hog is not ok, torturing family pets is ok.
Oh well...since giving up a kidney is a condition of parole, that makes perfect sense.
Maybe we need a bill to require anyone holding government office to pass a psychiatric test.

Anonymous said...

10:59, The statue for protecting farm animals is Section 97-41-15. It's there, I assume, because they have "value" whereas a beloved pet is "just a dog." Please help spread the word that farm animals are already protected. It is further proof that FB's arguments against 2127 are simply not valid.

At this point, maybe these representatives who are against this bill not only need a psychiatric evaluation, but an IQ test as obviously they are not even of normal intelligence!

Having dealt with legislators on a few issues, the three most repeated sentences I heard were as follows:

" I don't have time to read that" ( either the bill or information about the bill)

" I'm too busy, I just vote what I feel"

" I just vote for what my constituents want whether it's stupid or not"

Having read both the bill and information I was giving them and knowing it never took more than an hour ( this isn't DC...bills aren't volumious), I never could figure out what they thought their job description was. I did see them spend their time " meeting" , getting into p**sing matches with those they didn't like, raising money for future campaigns, getting PAC/organizational support, getting state jobs for relatives and partying in one manner or another.

The exceptions in my day were Carmicheal,Smith,Montgomery,Grisham,Ellington, and Rosenblatt. They all had read every bill and knew the facts pro and con. AND,if they couldn't support a bill, they would honestly tell you why.

Frugal Gal said...

I am sure Marlo Kirkpatrick and the others who are actively lobbying on this issue have created a "one sheet," a single page that gives the bill number, highlights the main points, shows what it DOESN'T do, and indicates who is supporting it. When you put that in the face of legislators they can't claim ignorance of the bill.

It would be great if any such item products by MS-FACT could be posted here so interested citizens could print off copies and send them to their legislators.

KF, this might be too large a task to manage from a single blog, but what would you say to an effort to locate a minimum of five people from every state senate and house district to contact their legs? These would need to be strong supporters, too, the ones who are willing to go beyond "please vote for this bill" all the way to "I will remember your vote at election time and will make sure all my friends, relatives, and colleagues know your vote, too."

Is that something MS-FACT is already doing?

Frugal Gal, MS-FACT has what are called county coordinators, but the coordinators seem to be a bit lacking. Having worked with MS-FACT, this is in no way reflective of their abilities, just some other individuals lack of it. Why don't you contact Marlo and talk with her about how you can help accomplish this idea of which you spoke. They really could use the help. Marlo is creative, great person to work with. I encourage anyone reading this blog to join in and assist in any way you can. This bill affects everyone, not just cats and dogs.

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
