Breaking: Hearing officer recommends CON denial for St. D

Just learned St. Dominic's application for a certificate of need for its proposed Madison facility was denied.

When are we going to get rid of the entire CON process?

Update: I was told by a very good source it was denied but a commentor wrote the hearing officer recommended denial but the State Health Officer has the final decision. Stay tuned. Regardless, St. D just had a nice obstacle placed in its path to Madison. Commentor was right.

What?????? That's crazy! Perhaps they should hire Butler Snow attorneys:)

This is absolutely ridiculous. The whole process needs to be changed. This will be a real loss for the whole JAckson area!

Ain't no way those folks are heading to Canton when they need medical help. No way, no how.

Correction: the application has *not* been denied. The hearing officer has recommended disapproval. It's the State Health Officer who makes the final decision.

Efforts to contact Brunini have been unsuccessful today.

St. Dominic needs to mix politics and health and put a few State Senators on their board and lo and behold great things might happen, just saying.

Karma, LOL.

First, the CON process protects the public by ensuring that everyone doesn't have extra rooms not used, MRIs and CTs and Gamma Knives that have to have payments made on them. Or allow hospitals to pick and choose the patients they serve by locating in certain areas and improving their payment sources.

The Little Sister's of the Divine Dollar are going to have to suck it up like everyone else. And Madisonites are not entitled and priveledged so much as some of them presume and espouse.

BS. PROVE IT. The CON process is PURE CON.

BS back to you. You prove that getting rid of it works Ed. Or is it Mary?

I'd ask when over-building has EVER lowered end-user costs on healthcare Mr. Freemarketer. Especially when OVERHEAD contributes to the final costs.

Are you Babs? She's usually in the mix to insure that Canton gets left in the dust.

7:24 us correct, the CON process while looking stupid on the outside, provides protection to the patient and is a needed process. And I agree that the big St. D and Madison the City are going to have to learn that the rules apply to them just as they do to all others.

oh yeah! the .gov protecting us from those big bad hospitals!!! please...

most hospitals, GASP... operate for profit! they don't do it because they just really truly love to make people happy and feel good. they want money. if St. D's builds a hospital, and it sucks... guess what? they don't get paid. It's really pretty simple. But, go ahead, get your government to regulate who can and can't build a freaking hospital.

I really can't believe this is even an issue. I honestly forget that this is the USA. I feel like I'm living in Venezuela or Cuba.

I feel like I'm living in Venezuela or Cuba.

No, that would be if you live in Jackson, specifically Fondren.

Anonymous said...

Stephen. Obviously you don't have a clue about government regulations, of any sort, which abound in every area of your life already: not to mention you haven't been to Venezuela or Cuba or you wouldn't use those as your comparison model.

Do your parents know you're up this late at night on the computer talking to adults that just happen to do this for a livelihood?

Anonymous said...

FYI... If you lived in Cuba, you'd get better healthcare than here in MS (and many other states).

Anonymous said...

Right. Then after your generous (and quasi competent) medical treatment you could return to your dirt floored shack home, eat the leftover rice crumbs the vermin left behind for your supper and listen to Cuban baseball on your circa 1960s tube radio. Cheers!

I forgot to include the link above for Stephen's healthcare outcomes and economics edification. The poor ole USA appears to have struggled past Cuba and Venezuela.

Of course, you can't confuse a fool with facts. They've got their minds made up already and it
s like wrestling a pig on here sometimes. The pig likes it and you just get dirty attempting the feat.

St D could have bought the old canton hosp like hma did to get the con

Anonymous said...

That would have required St. D to spend money instead of attempting to collect money.

Anonymous said...

I can't speak intelligently about the con process, but I can speak from experience about Cuba. Stephen, you are a fucking idiot! Harvey, you are running a close second. I have no links to prove my point, just the deed to the land my family owned in Cuba before it was taken by Fidel in the Revolution. Anonymous 9:50, I hope the next time you enter a hospital you get some Cuban treatment. Not the bullshit treatment Michael Moore and the liberal assholes got when letting the Cuban government know they were on their way, but the healthcare that is administered on a daily basis to the Cuban people. Only a fool would compare Cuba to the United States.

I get in my car and drive ten miles down Lakeland Drive to St. Dominics with no problem. In fact I have done it many, many times. The people in Madison can get on I-55 and do the same thing.

Legislation passed during the Reagan admin made having a CON process a state option, not a mandate. Since then, about 2/3rds of the states have eliminated or severely curtailed their CON process. Of course, Miss. still has CON. Generally in this state, the CON process is used by the bigs to stop other bigs from expanding or adding to their current set-up. It has also be used to keep the mid-sized and little health care providers from expanding. The Legislature could end it or an activist judge could declare it unconstitutional, but O/W we are stuck with it. However, in this case, I'll bet the State Health Officer goes with St. D and against the board.

"However, in this case, I'll bet the State Health Officer goes with St. D and against the board."

What board?

The MSDH staff recommended disapproval; the hearing officer recommended disapproval. Currier could still rule for St. D, but has that ever happened before against both staff and hearing recommendations?

St. D's problem is that it won its 1998 suit vs. then-Methodist to keep it from moving empty beds to north Jackson -- that's not a "relocation," St. D argued, it's a new hospital. And that's bitten them in the ass ever since.

Come on, since a crucifix hangs over the door of Applebee's in Madison, surely Jesus will pull for Madison!

As Cuba continues its struggle to survive in a hostile capitalist world and build its socialist society, it has put education and health as its priorities. This is the advice Fidel Castro has given to other nations of the world that have been able to make some headway in their fight for social overhauls. A revolution can survive, he has stated over again, only if the people are literate and healthy.

Sadly, the US remains the world's only developed nation without a universal health care plan for its people. We are the only industrialized nation without a subsidized prescription drug plan for all. These are the issues that must be used to judge our candidates this election year. We are a secure nation, and from that strength, we must not be too proud to ignore the paradigm that is Cuba.

Hey 12:51 -- It is good that you are posting anonymously. I am sure many in your family would be ashamed to know they have such a mindless BS babbling fool in the family.

You are clearly unaware of the realities of Cuba, the Castro brothers and/or their buddy Che'. Ever wonder why people risk their lives by jumping on little half-assed rafts in an effort to reach the USA shore? Do you think it is because things are great in Cuba?

Trust me. It is NOT what Michael Moore has led you to believe. My friend's family fled Cuba after he seized all her families property. Her father joined them in the US after spending 11 years in one of Castro's resorts for political opponents when he was released (sans two fingers removed by Castro's goons). They have a new life here in the US and thank God everyday for the USA.

Until you take the time to get some information from sources other than Michael Moore, Cynthia McKinney and the Congressional Black Caucus, at least have the decency to stop rubbing your mindless babbling in the face of people who DO KNOW first hand the realities of Cuba and the Castro brothers. In short, how about STFU?

I think the person that called me an idiot is missing my point. I'm not saying our healthcare=cuban healthcare.

I'm saying the government intervention and regulation in every single facet of our life is like that of Cuba/Venezuela. You posting that your family's land was taken in the revolution I'm pretty sure proves my point.

I appreciate the personal attacks 9:49. I thought as "adults" we were above that.

Anon @1251. Couple of questions for you, 1) When does your boat bound for Cuba leave? and 2)If you haven't booked a boat ride yet, would you be amenable to being used in political prisoner trade with Cuba and trade places with someone that doesn't want to be there, since it's clear you prefer Cuba to the USA.

And one more thing. What the hell does Cuba have to do with the CON thread?

The CON process should be eliminated. Hospitals should be allowed to compete in a free and open market like any other business. Perhaps a little competition would result in improved and more affordable healthcare for our state. Has anyone been to an ER at Baptist, St. D. or UMC (FOR AN EMERGENCY)lately? You will wait for HOURS!!! Take a pillow and blanket -- and a number. It seems this too could be somewhat alleviated with the addition of more hospitals. The choices of Jackson hospitals now are the same as 40 years ago. This is not just about Madison residents, the CON process smacks of stinkin' politics.

Anonymous said...

Just a thought what if... River Oaks Madison has no competition? What if they set it up the way that is best for them (profit)not the citizens of the county. You know like having still to drive over to CMMC or River Oaks for certain test. Now if Baptist or St D want to spend private dollars to make the market competive who among us is paying more? Insurance compamnies set payment and now so will big brother. Competition is GOOD at retail-hospitals-card dealers I don't care. If its private money at risk let them have at it and the best provider or sevice will win and so will the county residents and patients in the long run.

I was flying out of Jackson years ago when HMA executives were just completing an audit of the Ridgwood Road Hospital. Sitting behind them they could not wait to return to Floridia to tell their boss what a great job they did tricking all those people into believing their jobs would be saved. High fives and laughs all around. I leaned over the seat and ask to remember that the plane had not left the city they joked about and to be more respectful of that fact.

Frozen faced they looked at me for a second and started laughing all over again, one said to me its all about the money and who has it. We have and as long as we do we will control this market's hospitals. Yes these were very young guys but I bet some of them are around now what 10 years later.

Don't let the CON process sidetrack you from the real issue here: CUBA.

Auburn Rat said...

don't you guys have a real nice empty "hospital" at coounty line and 55 now? It was a Methodist Hospital complete with emergency and beds and ops and everything. Why would that facility not be reopened before a whole new facility is allowed to be built in "Madassylum". Wouldn't Jesus pull for the Methodist as well?

Anonymous said...

It never had an ER. I used to live close to there and went there with heart palpitations and was sent to St D.

No ER is correct. Currently being used by Select Specialty for patients-

Trollfest '09

Trollfest '07 was such a success that Jackson Jambalaya will once again host Trollfest '09. Catch this great event which will leave NE Jackson & Fondren in flames. Othor Cain and his band, The Black Power Structure headline the night while Sonjay Poontang returns for an encore performance. Former Frank Melton bodyguard Marcus Wright makes his premier appearance at Trollfest singing "I'm a Sweet Transvestite" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Kamikaze will sing his new hit, “How I sold out to da Man.” Robbie Bell again performs: “Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Bells” and “Any friend of Ed Peters is a friend of mine”. After the show, Ms. Bell will autograph copies of her mug shot photos. In a salute to “Dancing with the Stars”, Ms. Bell and Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith will dance the Wango Tango.

Wrestling returns, except this time it will be a Battle Royal with Othor Cain, Ben Allen, Kim Wade, Haley Fisackerly, Alan Lange, and “Big Cat” Donna Ladd all in the ring at the same time. The Battle Royal will be in a steel cage, no time limit, no referee, and the losers must leave town. Marshand Crisler will be the honorary referee (as it gives him a title without actually having to do anything).

Meet KIM Waaaaaade at the Entergy Tent. For five pesos, Kim will sell you a chance to win a deed to a crack house on Ridgeway Street stuffed in the Howard Industries pinata. Don't worry if the pinata is beaten to shreds, as Mr. Wade has Jose, Emmanuel, and Carlos, all illegal immigrants, available as replacements for the it. Upon leaving the Entergy tent, fig leaves will be available in case Entergy literally takes everything you have as part of its Trollfest ticket price adjustment charge.

Donna Ladd of The Jackson Free Press will give several classes on learning how to write. Smearing, writing without factchecking, and reporting only one side of a story will be covered. A donation to pay their taxes will be accepted and she will be signing copies of their former federal tax liens. Ms. Ladd will give a dramatic reading of her two award-winning essays (They received The Jackson Free Press "Best Of" awards.) "Why everything is always about me" and "Why I cover murders better than anyone else in Jackson".

In the spirit of helping those who are less fortunate, Trollfest '09 adopts a cause for which a portion of the proceeds and donations will be donated: Keeping Frank Melton in his home. The “Keep Frank Melton From Being Homeless” booth will sell chances for five dollars to pin the tail on the jackass. John Reeves has graciously volunteered to be the jackass for this honorable excursion into saving Frank's ass. What's an ass between two friends after all? If Mr. Reeves is unable to um, perform, Speaker Billy McCoy has also volunteered as when the word “jackass” was mentioned he immediately ran as fast as he could to sign up.

In order to help clean up the legal profession, Adam Kilgore of the Mississippi Bar will be giving away free, round-trip plane tickets to the North Pole where they keep their bar complaint forms (which are NOT available online). If you don't want to go to the North Pole, you can enjoy Brant Brantley's (of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance) free guided tours of the quicksand field over by High Street where all complaints against judges disappear. If for some reason you are unable to control yourself, never fear; Judge Houston Patton will operate his jail where no lawyers are needed or allowed as you just sit there for minutes... hours.... months...years until he decides he is tired of you sitting in his jail. Do not think Judge Patton is a bad judge however as he plans to serve free Mad Dog 20/20 to all inmates.

Trollfest '09 is a pet-friendly event as well. Feel free to bring your dog with you and do not worry if your pet gets hungry, as employees of the Jackson Zoo will be on hand to provide some of their animals as food when it gets to be feeding time for your little loved one.

Relax at the Fox News Tent. Since there are only three blonde reporters in Jackson (being blonde is a requirement for working at Fox News), Megan and Kathryn from WAPT and Wendy from WLBT will be on loan to Fox. To gain admittance to the VIP section, bring either your Republican Party ID card or a Rebel Flag. Bringing both and a torn-up Obama yard sign will entitle you to free drinks served by Megan, Wendy, and Kathryn. Get your tickets now. Since this is an event for trolls, no ID is required. Just bring the hate. Bring the family, Trollfest '09 is for EVERYONE!!!

This is definitely a Beaver production.
